Vacation Time: San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

View of La Parroquia, San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende (SMA) has been on our must-see list for a while, and we finally made it to this picturesque city in central Mexico.
We flew from the Tijuana Airport to Leon, using the recently opened Cross Border pedestrian bridge to easily access the airport. After a 90-minute drive from Leon, we arrived at the Rosewood Hotel. We were a bit apprehensive as we turned into the street the hotel is on. As the first photo shows, there is a construction site. Then we pulled up at the entrance.

Once you walk in you realize how lovely it is. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.

The grounds are full of wonderful sculptures. As you can see, the artist certainly has a unique creative vision. Too bad we don’t have a place for any of them.

Although the hotel is a little way from the Centro, we found that being away from the hubbub is refreshing and relaxing. The service is top-notch; everyone is friendly and greets you as you walk by (reminding me of the hotels in India).

Our room is huge, with a large sitting area and beautiful bathroom with sunken tub.

Cocktails with a View

We didn’t waste any time checking out the rooftop Luna Bar with its great view of the city and enjoyed excellent guacamole and drinks. Don’s was mezcal based and mine was gin with blackberry and Cointreau. While we were enjoying our drinks, I wolfed down the plaintain chips they serve; good thing Don doesn’t like them!

Later we returned for drinks and dinner with our friends Ann and George, whom we’d met on our National Geographic trip. Don stuck with his martinis, while I tried a different cocktail that was vodka, mandarin juice and liqueur, and vanilla. It was supposed to be made with whiskey, but I requested vodka–delish! We shared duck tacos and carne asada tacos that were exceptional, and calamari with chipotle that was so-so.

A great start to our getaway!

  1. I really enjoyed this and your Facebook posts about SMA. Clearly a place I need to put on my bucket list!

  2. My daughter is there, this week, with about 7 members of her ‘Walkie Talkie’ group. Her name is Jody Hammond Bangert and her phone # is 619-318-6926. They are staying in a beautiful home, that they found through Abnb.

  3. Marlene it looks like a fabulous find. We have been to Mexico many times but always on various coasts. I love the sculptures but like you not likely room at home for any of them. The one with the small people on the wheel is definitely my favorite. I want to scream ” Jump off you sillies are you’ll be squashed like pancakes!” 🙂

    1. It’s definitely worth a visit, Sue! I’m working on a few more posts. And yes, the sculptures were amazing! I looked at the hotel gallery to see if the artist did any miniatures but alas, no.

  4. Hi! Do you know if they make any plugins to assist with Search Engine Optimization? I’m trying
to get my blog to rank for some targeted keywords but I’m not seeing very good results.
If you know of any please share. Kudos!
